Marketing

Ex_Machina used the usual marketing campaigns to promote itself, such as its teaser trailers and full trailers, The trailers were shown in movie screens before other movies the full trailer was shown on TV as well, Posters were put up around public places such as bus stops. There was plenty of online adverts like on Facebook. However the one thing i found odd when searching this is that the marketers created a tinder account for Ava who actively posted and responded to people.

UK Tribes

UK Tribes

The group that I best belong to is the Aspirant group mainly with a touch of both Leading Edge and Mainstream and one thing from Urban. I see myself more as an Aspirant person for the following reasons.

Aspirant

Trendies are always up to date with fashion and music, They live on the bleeding edge of pop culture. I believe I fit into that bracket because of the amount of time i spend online clothes shopping. I spend a lot of money on clothes and i feel a bit silly if im not wearing the nicest shoes or someone has a newer jumper than me. I hate myself for typing this as now i realise how pathetic it is but i cant help myself as there is just so much good stuff coming out on online clothing shops such as ASOS and Size. I feel up to date with the music scene because i listen to Capital FM in the car that covers pop music, I hate it however as i feel that it is all generic auto tuned crap that pretentious artists (if you can call them artists) are spewing out to there "fans" who will buy anything. A lot of it is American and i cant stand any of it all that whip ney ney rubbish. I only listen to Capital due to the fact i one day hope that there will be some good music to come out again like there was in 2007-2011 i have fond memories of the music back then. I keep up to date with the other music such as electronic, Alt and house through media such as youtube or itunes. sometimes i download a new album illegally off the internet so i can keep up with artists new songs. Aspirants also mention "football lads" "love house/garage music" i have to say i fit that description quite well as i enjoy my football and support Leicester City and i keep very up to date with the latest house and garage music through Spinnin Records.

Leading Edge

One part of the leading edge tribe is Creatives who make things both physically and digitally. I have built computers and fixed things like iphones. I am also hands on and have enjoyed making things in DT since year 7. In my past time (when i get it) i like to prat around on FL studios and create digital music as i enjoy that kind of thing. I have also built PC's for family members in the past. At some point i would like to have a bit of fun with a venture i have thought off which is website creation as well. Leading Edge also mentions urban art such as plane clean edges and raw steel kind of interior art and i really like that kind of thing and in fact my room has that theme to it.

Mainstream

The only thing that i can relate to in the mainstream category is sporty junkie who is all about the win. Being a swimmer i feel that this encapsulates me and my sport perfectly in swimming there is no point doing it if you are not all about the win and are not competing on a high level, it consumes such a large part of your life its hard for you not to pay attention to it. i dont really like the rest of the things to do with mainstream im not about though like chav and bling.

Urban

The only thing i have in common is the get paid crew to some extent, i am all about getting money, having a job and generating more money through increasing my links in business and creating ideas/ starting a business. however the one thing i do not have in common with urban get paid crew is a bad past i mean im not perfect but i was never in with a bad crowd.

I dont specifically think that i model myself of a person or particular trend or consciously at least. i do however keep an eye on whats going on and what other people are wearing. I wouldn't say in any way im a trend setter but im always on apps and social media seeing whats new. Im sure there are hundreds of people out there with the same fashion sense as me but i like to mix and match and see what i like.

Making a movie, Key roles

Making a movie, Key roles

Writer

Screenwriters create screenplays for films. They provide the blueprint for the creative input of the Producer, Director, Production Designer, Composer and Editor, cast and crew. Screenplays should allow whoever is reading it to imagine how the film will work on screen. It should feature fascinating characters, an exciting plot, and a great idea for a marketable film. Screenwriters have to produce highly creative writing, to strict deadlines. They work with a script development team to create a finished product that is likely to be financed and made. In some cases the original Screenwriter may be replaced entirely by  another Screenwriter. In this case the original Screenwriter may then receive a "Screenstory by..." credit on the finished film. Screenwriters are almost always freelancers. They either pitch original ideas to Producers in the hope that they will be optioned or sold
You don’t need formal training or a specific qualification. You can go on screenwriting courses or take an MA.

If you are considering taking a film production course in higher education, the following courses have been rigorously assessed by the film industry and awarded the Creative Skillset Tick for the high standard of education they provide and the degree to which they prepare you for a career in film

Exhibition

Cinemas fall into 1 of 2 categories: national chains; and independent exhibitors. The specific programming will depend on the target audience, with large chains often filling their multiplexes with blockbuster fare and individual independents more likely to cater to art-house crowds. A natural entry route to  exhibition is to work in a cinema. Chains employ significant numbers of people to handle ticketing, confectionery sales (where cinemas tend to make the bulk of their profits), and film projection. Those working for independent exhibitors may be more involved in its programming as the cinema establishes a distinct identity for itself.

Producer

Producers have overall control on every  aspect of a film's production. They bring together and approve the whole production team. Their key responsibility is to create an environment where the talents of the cast and crew can flourish. Producers are accountable for the success of the finished film. They steer the film from beginning to completion and beyond. The Producer is often the first person to get involved in a project. In pre-production, Producers bring together the key members of the creative team. This includes the Director, Cinematographer and Production Designer and key cast members. Producers also approve locations, studio hire, the final shooting script, production schedule and budget. More time and money spent in pre-production can reduce time and money wasting when the production gets underway. Once the film is in production, Producers are responsible for the day-to-day smooth operation of the team. During post production, Producers are expected to liaise with the Director and post production department.
You don’t need a specific qualification. If you are considering taking a film production course in higher education, the following courses have been rigorously assessed by the film industry and awarded the Creative Skillset Tick for the high standard of education they provide and the degree to which they prepare you for a career in film.

Casting director

In pre-production, Casting Directors work with both the Director and Producer to assemble the perfect cast for the film. They are responsible for matching the ideal actor to each role, based on a number of factors, such as the actor's experience, ability, reputation, availability and box office appeal. They organize and conduct interviews and auditions for each part. Casting Directors need a vast knowledge of a huge range of Actors and an extensive understanding of their abilities, as well as a thorough appreciation of changing trends within the film industry. Casting Directors need a vast knowledge of a huge range of Actors and an extensive understanding of their abilities, as well as a thorough appreciation of changing trends within the film industry.
Although there is no specific training or qualifications for this role, you can study a  degree in arts, English, film, theatre, communications or media Studies, etc. Casting Directors are usually graduates in these subjects. You will also need an active interest in film, theatre and casting.

Director

Directors are responsible for creatively translating the film's written  script into actual images and sounds on the screen. They are ultimately responsible for a film's artistic and commercial success or failure. Directors may write the film's script or commission it to be written, or they may be hired after an early draft of the script is complete. They must then develop a vision for the finished film and work out how to achieve it. During pre-production, Directors make crucial decisions, such as selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film. They also manage the technical aspects of filming including the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments. During postproduction, Directors work closely with Editors through the many technical processes of editing, to reach the final cut or version of the film. At all stages, Directors are responsible for motivating the team to produce the best possible results.
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Director. There are numerous training courses and reference books on directing and studying the art and craft of directing is important.

Film finance

the role of the finance controller is very challenging; they control the funds and do the budget for all aspects of the production from wages to distribution of the final piece. Financial Controllers may supervise one or more full-time Assistants. On individual productions, Financial Controllers normally help Producers and Executive Producers to prepare budgets and raise finance, taking  into account any relevant Government tax Incentive schemes. Financial Controllers may undertake some or all of the Production Accountant's activities. This can include tasks such as controlling cash flow so that payments are made on time and setting up and managing the Accounts team.
You will need a BA degree in Accountancy to become a qualified Accountant and then to have a number of years' experience, ideally within film production, media or film finance.
Camera Operator- Camera Operators carry out the Director of Photography’s (DoP) and Director’s instructions for shot composition and development. Camera Operators usually start at the end of pre-production and attend technical recces with other Heads of Department. They work closely with the Director of Photography, Director and Grip
After the Director and DoP have rehearsed and blocked the shots, the Camera Operator and DoP decide where to position the camera and what lenses and supporting equipment to use. During shooting, Operators are responsible for all aspects of camera operation, enabling the DoP to concentrate intensively on lighting and overall visual style. Camera Operators make sure the camera and equipment are prepared for the required set-ups and ready for any last-minute  changes. Camera Operators work closely with performers, guiding them on what can and cannot be seen by the camera. The work is physically demanding, and requires high levels of strength and stamina. Hours are long (12-14 hours a day)
Like many Camera Operators, you can study for higher level qualifications, although no specific qualifications are required to work in this role.

Marketing

The marketing managers main priority is to convince the public that the movie is worth watching, marketing managers have to research the target audience to create appealing advertisements. After the film has been released the Marketing Manger must create interest in the merchandise and DVD release to continue the revenue. Sometimes the role might involve the implementation of a campaign created by a studio and/or the filmmakers. These must be re-tailored for different territories according to cultural differences. Marketing and Publicity Managers must be fully aware of the Distributors' needs and requirements. As every film is different, every marketing campaign must also be unique. Work on a film's marketing campaign may begin over a year prior to its release, but more usually the lead time is several months.
You will need higher-level qualifications in Marketing, PR, Business or subjects related to business.

Editor

Editors are one of the key Heads of Department on feature films, responsible for First Assistant Editors, and on bigger productions, Second Assistants and Trainees. The Editor works closely with the Director, crafting the daily rushes into a coherent whole. To ensure that the story flows effortlessly from beginning to end, Editors work long, unsociable hours, often under pressure, in an edit suite. They are employed on a freelance basis by the Producer. The editors are based on their reputation and experience. Editors often work on television drama, as well as on feature films. The Editor works closely with the Director before shooting begins, deciding how to maximise the potential of the screenplay. Because scenes are shot and edited out of sequence, Editors may work on scenes from the end of the film before those at the beginning, Editors select the best takes and edit them together to create scenes. During the post production period, the Editor and the Director work closely together, refining the assembly edit into the Director's Cut, which must be approved by the Producers, until they achieve picture lock or Fine Cut.
You don’t need a specific qualification. But if you are considering taking a film  production course in higher education, the following courses have been rigorously assessed by the film industry and awarded the Creative Skill set Tick for the high standard of education they provide and the degree to which they prepare you for a career in film.

Production Designer

Production Designers are major heads of department on film crews, and are responsible for the entire art department, They help Directors to define and achieve the look and feel of a film. They put a great deal of work into making the location of the film convincing to the audience. Production Designers begin work at the very early stages of pre-production. They may be asked to look at scripts to provide spending estimates before a Director is even approached. They meet with the Director to discuss how best to shoot the film and work out whether to use sets and/or locations, what should be built and what should be adapted and whether there is a visual theme that recurs throughout the film. They decide wether or not to use CGI or real props and locations based on create ability and cost. Production Designers must calculate the budgets and decide how the money and effort will be spent, Although Production Designers usually finish work on the last day of principal photography, on larger films they may be involved for longer periods. They may have to prepare detailed drawings and specifications in order to pitch for work on a number of productions before  being offered work on one of them. Although the work can be very demanding and the hours long, this is one of the most highly-skilled, creatively fulfilling roles within the film industry.
You will need to be a graduate of art, architecture, theatre, interior or 3D design courses. After this, you can complete a specialist course in film and/or theatre design.

5x5

5 Artists

Aavicii
ELO
Galantis
The XX
Tiesto

I have chosen these artists because they are my most listened to at the moment however i do enjoy plenty of other artists and bands. The bands and artists on this list all create electronic music, for example ELO still sing in there work but the sounds and the background music are generated on electronic instruments of synthesisers. jump forward a few decades to Galantis they have singing in there work but just the same as ELO the background music is electronic however it is created digitally as compared to ELO but the principle is still the same. Having the background music electronically created gives the music a sharper more spine tingling listening experience as i feel it jumps out at me.

5 Movies

The Inbetweeners Movie
The Hangover
Step Brothers
The Anchorman
Bruno

What all the movies on this list have in common is they are all very funny (to me al least). I do enjoy action movies and horror movies but give me the option and i will always pick comedy due to the ease of watching. I have watched the movies countless times and i will always be willing to watch them again, they never fail to make me laugh out loud. the only movie on the list that i might watch with my parents is The Anchorman and even that is a bit close to the bone, but overall the jokes and gags in the movies are adult from the language used to references given thats why these movies are my top 5.

5 TV Shows

American Dad
Family Guy
The Simpsons
Breaking Bad
The Inbetweeners

American Dad, Family Guy and the Simpsons are all a cartoons that are easy watching and funny, i can watch them for hours and hours, i feel a connection to the characters in all three cartoons due to the fact i have watched them religiously every week without fail. i always feel lost when they aren't on and i find myself re watching my old favourites online.
Breaking Bad is the only real serious TV show on this list, thats down to the fact that the show developed just quick enough to keep the suspense and interest while at the same time making you wait for the ultimate outcome of the season, however i do feel the show could have ended slightly sooner. I also enjoyed the was main characters where killed off to develop the story.
The inbetweeners was just grossly funny with each episode leaving me almost in tears, it perfectly depicts lads at school prating around and getting into all sorts of cringe worthy situations. The show finished way to early leaving it a cult classic that is always worth a re visit once in a while.

5 comedians

Peter Kay
Peter Kay must be my all time favourite comedian due to his versatility and the face that i can relate to everything he says. i never fail to laugh when i watch anything he is in from his stand up to his latest show car share. unfortunately i have never got to see his live shows but i really want to before he retires. i enjoy a lot of his TV works such as phoenix nights and cradle to grave which i am currently watching.
Rob Brydon
i enjoy watching things with Rob Brydon in, the face he is a very intelligent man creates a depth to his jokes. i saw the show he did with Steve Coogan where they travel Europe, it is very interesting and the jokes are very informative, it may sound strange but it is deep and well thought out. probably my all time favourite pice of work he was heavily involved it was gavin and stacey which was a great watch.
Sean Lock
Sean locks jokes are based very heavily around scenarios that we would never picture ourselves in but when we think about it, it is very funny. i particularly enjoy watching him on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown where he brings in a stupidly funny mascot that makes me laugh harder than most the jokes on the show. he is almost the best one liner/ comeback comedian as well just falling short to milton jones
Lee Evans
If you don't enjoy Lee Evans then you must have a very poor sense of humour, his sketches are always fresh and he always puts 100% into his stand up, he is very passionate about what he does which does shows very much in his work, his harmless jokes are funny and un offensive.
Harry Hill
Harry hill was the bomb on my Saturday nights with his TV burp which took the pee out of shows i hate including corry and east enders. his style of comedy is silly harmless fun which even now makes me laugh like a little child. i would even go as far to say that you've been framed wouldn't be that funny without his voice over and for that reason he makes it on the top 5 list.

5 Songs

ELO- All Over The World
This is my favourite ELO song due to its up beat tempo and the song lyrics, i think the artists in the band ELO make the song what it is and not the lyrics or the backing music. if anyone else sung the song i wouldn't enjoy it. the song keeps loud and in full throttle all the way through which makes it a great song to listen to before a race or at the gym.
The XX- Intro
this is probably my favourite non lyrical song, i always listen to this song before a race. it builds up great tension which helps me perform. there have been variations and remixes to this song which i enjoy but the original is always the best.
Brian Eno- An Ending (Acent)
this song is always a fitting piece to a dramatic TV show or movie it sends shivers down my spine but at the same time can relax me and sometimes helps me get to sleep. i believe each person takes a different interpretation on the song , mine for example is very organic and earthly.
John Murphy- In A Heartbeat
i first heard this song when i was about 11 watching at the time my favourite show which was doctor who and this song was on when rose died, it sounds kind of daft that the first time i heard the song was on a sic fi show but as soon as it had played i was looking up what it was. I'm not sure if the reason i like it is because of its accompaniment to doctor who or the fact it gives me goosebumps.
Slade- Merry Xmas Everybody

it may seem strange that a christmas song made it on my list due to fact you can only listen to it for a month a year but i feel thats why it is special. this was the first christmas song i remember and know all the words to. the song is on at the happiest time of the year so I'm always up beat when listening to this song.

7 areas of representation

7 areas of representation

You need to understand how specific representations of individuals, groups, events or places are created.

Particular areas of representation that may be chosen are:

  1. Gender
  2. Age
  3. Ethnicity
  4. Sexuality
  5. Class and status
  6. Physical ability/disability
  7. Regional identity.

These are the 4 things you use to analyse the clip and answer the exam question.  These 4 things will all help to construct the representation of the individual/group (the 7 areas of representation).  It is your job to discuss how.

Camera Shots, Angle, Movement, Composition.

  • Shots: establishing shot, master shot, close-up, mid-shot, long shot, wide shot, two-shot, aerial shot, point of view shot, over the shoulder shot, and variations of these.
  • Angle: high angle, low angle, canted angle.
  • Movement: pan, tilt, track, dolly, crane, steadicam, hand-held, zoom, reverse zoom.
  • Composition: framing, rule of thirds, depth of field – deep and shallow focus, focus pulls.

Editing

Includes transition of image and sound – continuity and non-continuity systems.
  • Cutting: shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, graphic match, action match, jump cut, crosscutting, parallel editing, cutaway; insert.
  • Other transitions, dissolve, fade-in, fade-out, wipe, superimposition, long take, short take, slow motion, ellipsis and expansion of time, post-production, visual effects.

Sound

  • Soundtrack: score, incidental music, themes and stings, ambient sound.
  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound; synchronous/asynchronous sound; sound effects; sound motif, sound bridge, dialogue, voiceover, mode of address/direct address, sound mixing, sound perspective.

Mise-en-Scène

  • Production design: location, studio, set design, costume and make-up, properties.
  • Lighting; colour design

The Man And Woman

My preconceived misconception of this man based on the image is that he doesn't have a lot of physical possessions in life due to the fact that he looks scruffy and looks like a vagrant. His unshaven beard gives the impression that he might not have access to sanitary facilities. His story is that he used to be a big city banker until he got a bit big headed and lost all his money in a trade. Now all he does is wander the streets all day looking for things to sell and eat. The background possibly New York or some other big city's have a lot of homeless people or they seem to be more common so the background is basically backing up my initial thought on the man based on the image. There is another gentleman behind him who also looks homeless so one might think that this is a popular spot for homeless people to gather. The fact that the man is stood still looking at peace with his surroundings like he belongs there also makes me think he could have been homeless for a relatively long time.

The man is in fact Doug Bihlmaier buyer for Ralph Lauren.

This woman is not homeless however she lives in a small rented accommodation in a bad part of town. She is a dinner lady that hates her job and she works for very little. She used to be married but her husband left her for a younger woman. After that happened she lost her mind and now collects porcelain cats. I think this because of what she is wearing and the old lay trolley she is pulling. The background looks a bit shabby this is why i think she might live in a slightly dodgy part of town. The stress that her divorce had on her is why she looks old and worn down, She might have turned to smoking and alcohol. The clothes she is wearing look creased and from the past so that makes me think that she bought them from a charity shop of has just never updated her wardrobe. perhaps still living in the past.

The woman is actress Julie Christie.

This man is a fashion designer who looks very european who became famous through his connections and he hasn't had to work hard for what he has. He designs women's clothing, he gets overpaid for what he does and therefor looks down on everyone else. I think this because of the way he is walking, his skin tone suggests he is European the clothes he is wearing are pretty pretentious and typical of people in the fashion industry. He looks slightly feminine, that also links to the fashion industry because i have a very narrow minded idea of the fashion industry based on people like Gok Wan. He stands out from the crowd clothing wise making me think that he has a link to fashion.
